Real Project Management for Real Businesses

As of Sunday, January 9th, the first version of the Risk Management Module is available for Web2project. While I’d love to be able to describe all the changes, the conversion process covered so many aspects, it’s hard to list them all. The most important ones are:

  • It supports full permissions, so you can configure Roles or individual permissions to give your team members exactly the amount of access you want.
  • Due to old database structures and oddities, there were numerous huge queries done. With the improvements from web2project, we were able to drop 75% of those queries. Not simplify 75% but eliminate them outright. The fastest query is the one you don’t have to do.
  • The module implements the hook_search interface. It allows the main system to search it just like any other module. You don’t have to do or configure anything else.

Regardless of the improvements, there’s still no reporting to go along with this. Therefore, we need some feedback. If you have suggestions or requirements on what reporting is necessary, please visit the web2project Forums and let us know!

Also, if you’re not familiar with the concept of Risk Management, learn about it. Every Project Manager should know the key concepts and principles.

Based on the updates to core web2project this module will be easier and faster to maintain going forward.

After a major cleanup of the structure and logic due to a handful of issues, v4.1 of the Project Importer is now available! You can download the latest version here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/web2project-mod/files/Project-Importer/

The purpose of the Project Importer is to allow users to import their project plans from other systems. Currently Microsoft Project and WBS Gantt Chart Pro are supported.

The significant changes in this release include:

  • Fixed a major issue where dependencies weren’t being imported properly or sometimes at all.
  • Added a tweak to the MS Project processor to make sure the project title is retrieved properly.
  • Fixed an issue where the Project Start Date was not set properly in the MS Project import
  • Tweaked the import process so that if there’s no Company match, it default’s to the current User’s Company. This resolves the issue where a Project could accidentally get assigned to no Company and therefore disappear due to permissions.
  • Changed the licensing to align with the coming web2project license shift.

There is a goal to support additional file type imports. At present, CSV – as an Excel export – is one option but is the most difficult due to a lack of formal/official column/field structure that a user could create. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to share them in our forums.

Excellent. That sounds great. There are a few things you should do to get started:

  • First, explore the Module Builder Guide. Everything there should be correct and accurate as of the v2.0 release of web2project but if you find something incomplete or odd, don’t hesitate to ask on the Support Forums.
  • Next, as you work on your module, instead of writing your own functions for getting Project Lists or Active Users or other common things, check out the core system and use those functions instead. They’re useful, well-tested, and then you have less code to write.
  • Finally, when you run into trouble, visit the Support Forums. Our great community is knowledgeable and friendly.

As of last week, we’ve released v1.1 of the Todos Module which is fully compatible with the latest and greatest features in web2project v2.0.

In addition, this closes a handful of issues:

  • Resolved an annoyance where deleting an item caused the browser to scroll to the top, now it stays in place as expected;
  • The Category List is now stored in the System Lookup Values as opposed to being hardcoded in the CTodo class (resolves #363);
  • Updated the main controller to match the existing basic controller structure;
  • Removed a method that could be replaced with a core function;
  • Updated the contact information lookup to use the new Contact Methods structure;

This module can be downloaded from the Web2project Modules project on SourceForge.
